Can you try a recent version of PHP and check if this problem persists?

Using mysql_pconnect() for persistent connections often causes PHP Access violations. Switching to
mysql_connect() solves the problem.
Mysql version 3.23.36-debug.
Seen on two different systems so far, some symptoms and same resolution.
