Yes, the alarm() stuff is questionable. I know I was the one to encourage
that one, but since I am somewhat involved in Apache 2.0 issues these days
it looks like it may be a bad idea to introduce it at this point. Signals
and threads do not go well together. We may want to look at doing
something similar with select() or hold off completely for a bit until I
figure out how this would mesh with Apache 2.0 better.
I would hate to introduce something at this point that is impossible to
carry forward into Apache 2.0.
