There should be support for selecting the database on mysql_connect, and may be support for mysql_options. There is a proposal in the Dev list archives. I don't currently have a copy to send. If you come from C, its annoying, to use the (deprecated) functions mysql_connect + mysql_select_db. Its ok for BC, but mysql_real_connect should be art of the state.
