This is usually due to a GD library version mismatch. If PHP thinks you
have GD-1.2 but you link against 1.3 or vice versa, this can happen. Do a
"make clean; rm config.cache" and try rebuilding PHP. Also make sure
that the gd.h file you are compiling against matches the libgd.a file you
are linking against.
