Dying? Hmm, doubtfull. It is open source, even if everyone all over the
world agrees to stop developing PHP, the source will still be available
for download somewhere.
The only way to kill PHP, Linux, *BSD, etc. is to destroy every single
copy on every single machine all over the world at the same time. It isn't
going to happen.
People who say PHP is dying are either making it up, or have heard it from
someone who was making it up. Probably some Microsoft spokesweasel.
At my companies site, www.dmn.com, we are an all PHP shop. No perl, no
java, just PHP (and some application servers written in C)
I quite honestly could not imagine how we could have done the site without
PHP. I've used all the M$ offerings, Java, and other things. PHP beats
them all on a number of levels:
(1) The language is very logical, it is well thought out and manageable.
(2) Extensible, we are running a few custom PHP extensions.
(3) External API support, we use Oracle, PostgreSQL, XML, etc. on our
site. It is trivial to configure and get working.
(4) More than Fast enough. It is a fairly fast environment. It isn't the
fastest, but IMHO it is the a good compromise between speed and features.
