If the easy-to-write php function doesn't take the   conversion into
account, I am _for_ adding unhtmlentities. Adding this to the php-function
would make it non-trivial, IMHO.
I noticed that the conversion-function _is_ in the docs, so that at least is
a Good Thing (TM).
