global variables in php3-module

Hi, I recently created a php3-module for the payment system "cashcow" (http://www.cashcow.dk). Now I need to store some global values, like passwphrases for encrypted private keys, which I ask from the user when Apache starts. I only want to ask once, not one time for every Apache thread. It seems I have to mess with some of the #IFDEF threadsafe stuff that I see in other modules, but what exactly is necessary is a bit hard for me to find out. Does anyone have some info on this?
