You probably configured --enable-mbstr-enc-trans which had this issue in 4.2.3; since you are probably not really using that functionality (because if you really knew what it does, you wouldn't have enabled it!), remove the option and reconfigure. IIRC, Yasuo fixed this in the branch (and in HEAD). --Wez.
