gdttf.c draws on GD images by using an intermediate pixmap buffer and then
copying the pixels with gdSetPixel. As you can imagine, this is about as
slow as it gets -- gdttf.c would be first on my rewrite list even if we
stay with gd. (It's a fine hack though -- gd and freetype just have both
evolved to a point where more elegant solutions seem to be possible)
