I just tried latest CVS HEAD and could not reproduce this.
Are you sure you have all the latest tools installed? (e.g. phpize..)
# cd ext/gd
# phpize
# ./configure --with-gd=php
# make
And I got working shared GD module..nothing else wasn't enabled
but the png support.
