Not so. I've been studying part-time IIOP for about 2 weeks now with
the intent of creating a php module which would allow php to connect
to an IIOP server, issue IIOP requests and handle IIOP results. I've
been hampered somewhat by lack of concise documentation on IIOP --
most of the stuff I've seen is simply too verbose and/or too high
level to be useful to me.
The best documentation I've found so far are two papers at
http://www.cs.wustl.edu/~schmidt/corba-research-performance.html
which go into the details of what the ACE project did to make TAO faster
than the Sun IIOP. I've also been studying the internals of TAO, MICO,
omniORB, ORBit, ORBacus, and Fnorb to get some ideas.
My current plan is to:
1) update the compiler/os on my FreeBSD machine so that I can use one
or more of the aforementioned orbs for testing.
2) design/implement a primitive DII interface which would expose the IIOP
details to the php developer. This is first because it is easiest.
3) design/implement an interface to parse IDL and/or communicate with an
interface repository so that IIOP objects appear as native PHP objects.
This is more complicated and would involve working out a mapping from
IIOP types to PHP types.
I'm hoping to begin actual coding soon. I'd appreciate ideas or suggestions
from anyone interested in this.
