SMTP and PHP...

Is anyone working on a SMTP interface for PHP? We are using the web front end IMP, an IMAP client available at horde.org. We are using Solaris, our problem is that we don't want to use the sendmail function that PHP3 contains, we want the ability to use any SMTP server available. Can anyone point me into the right direction in terms of how to go about writing a library for PHP3, or lead me to the right person whom may have already provide an SMTP interface through PHP3.
