The change dates back to 2009 (when it was still APC).

No surprise that APC's docs are also incorrect.

From http://php.net/manual/en/apcu.configuration.php#ini.apcu.shm-size,
apc.shm_size should be an integer.
If you put an integer in your configuration you get :
$ php -d apc.shm_size=1 -v
PHP Warning: PHP Startup: apc.shm_size now uses M/G suffixes, please update your ini files in
Unknown on line 0
[...]
So I think the documentation need an update, apc.shm_size is a string and the suffixes should be
mentioned.
