From: Operating system: PHP version: Irrelevant Package: Documentation problem Bug Type: Documentation Problem Bug description:lack of precision in section entitled 'back references' Description: ------------ PHP documentation entitled 'back references' states that: "In other words, the parentheses that are referenced need not be to the left of the reference for numbers less than 10." I think that this sentence in documentation is too short. I found excerpt in PCRE documentation (http://www.pcre.org/pcre.txt) that extends above sentence. "In other words, the parentheses that are referenced need not be to the left of the reference for numbers less than 10. A "forward back reference" of this type can make sense when a repetition is involved and the subpattern to the right has participated in an earlier iteration. It is not possible to have a numerical "forward back reference" to a subpattern whose number is 10 or more using this syntax because a sequence such as \50 is interpreted as a character defined in octal." In my opinion the extended sentence is better to understand. -- Edit bug report at http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=52066&edit=1 -- Try a snapshot (PHP 5.2): http://bugs.php.net/fix.php?id=52066&r=trysnapshot52 Try a snapshot (PHP 5.3): http://bugs.php.net/fix.php?id=52066&r=trysnapshot53 Try a snapshot (trunk): http://bugs.php.net/fix.php?id=52066&r=trysnapshottrunk Fixed in SVN: http://bugs.php.net/fix.php?id=52066&r=fixed Fixed in SVN and need be documented: http://bugs.php.net/fix.php?id=52066&r=needdocs Fixed in release: http://bugs.php.net/fix.php?id=52066&r=alreadyfixed Need backtrace: http://bugs.php.net/fix.php?id=52066&r=needtrace Need Reproduce Script: http://bugs.php.net/fix.php?id=52066&r=needscript Try newer version: http://bugs.php.net/fix.php?id=52066&r=oldversion Not developer issue: http://bugs.php.net/fix.php?id=52066&r=support Expected behavior: http://bugs.php.net/fix.php?id=52066&r=notwrong Not enough info: http://bugs.php.net/fix.php?id=52066&r=notenoughinfo Submitted twice: http://bugs.php.net/fix.php?id=52066&r=submittedtwice register_globals: http://bugs.php.net/fix.php?id=52066&r=globals PHP 4 support discontinued: http://bugs.php.net/fix.php?id=52066&r=php4 Daylight Savings: http://bugs.php.net/fix.php?id=52066&r=dst IIS Stability: http://bugs.php.net/fix.php?id=52066&r=isapi Install GNU Sed: http://bugs.php.net/fix.php?id=52066&r=gnused Floating point limitations: http://bugs.php.net/fix.php?id=52066&r=float No Zend Extensions: http://bugs.php.net/fix.php?id=52066&r=nozend MySQL Configuration Error: http://bugs.php.net/fix.php?id=52066&r=mysqlcfg
