The first section of example 2, where it is checking for file type, is wrong.
It should be using (($perms & 0xF000) == 0xC000), (($perms & 0xF000) == 0xA000), (($perms
& 0xF000) == 0x8000), etc.
Even better, why not make it a switch on ($perms & 0xF000)
