New Comment:
Well maybe it's just my distribution that had it off by default.
But I hope you can agree that leaving it off has been the recommendation for a long time.

It remains on by default with PHP 5.3.x, but was removed in PHP 5.4.
Suggestion: Simply remove the string "(it's on by default)" from those docs, and
let people read about magic_quotes_gpc elsewhere.

It was true as for PHP 5.3.x, so I am not sure about this "long time" claim.

Description:
------------
The page http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.stripslashes.php
claims that magic_quotes_gpc defaults to on. That hasn't been true for a long time, and
it's certainly not true now.
