This sentence should be corrected, since it lets misunderstandings arise - in connection with the lower part in http://de3.php.net/manual/en/ref.image.php "Only supported in GD versions older than gd-1.6. Read-only GIF support is available with PHP 4.3.0 and the bundled GD-library. Write support is avaliable since PHP 4.3.9 and PHP 5.0.1." since gd-version 2.0.28, the gif-support in gd-lib is again restored (see http://www.boutell.com/gd/).
