I just wrote a payback transaction server with PHP for a
company called OBI - they've choosen PHP and kicked out a
Java offer. It uses Jan Kneschkes lighttpd for performance
reasons with PHP's FastCGI SAPI and the PHP load balancing
mechanism that was built into lighttpd.
I don't think that a student with 750 EUR/month could do
this. Because he doesn't know how to do it and he doesn't
even know that tools like lighttpd or premiumthttpd or
FastCGI SAPI exist. Nor does he have knowledge about tools
like gdb, tcpdump/tcpshow, dbg, error_log (and its kinds),
lxr.php.net (reading the PHP source and debug it), strace
and Microsoft Visual C++ (on Win platforms) in order to debug
your applications.
Right. It would be nice to see articles on this, and particularly conference sessions ;) I would be very happy to attend one such session at the Intl. 2003 conf in november (if I can manage to get there again :).
