But where should be make an effort to use KDE/Linux? Many schools could use KDE/Linux as their primary OS, because most people just need the tools to do simple surfing and text-editing (Moz Firebird and OpenOffice) and having a share for their files. This could be achieved with very low cost licenses and hardware (my school has a lot of 468 and P-133 running Win98 - which of course runs really slow). They could use these computers with KDE/Linux and get a lot more millage of them.
KDE on an 486/P-133 ??? Sorry, but I am working on a development project for Iran and Afghanistan and they HAVE many of this Very-Old-Computers.... Best of luck to you...
KDE is Overkill !!!
This is propobly correct - but with that many people used to ONLY windows you wouldn't get away with fx fvwm2...
I am using Debian GNU/Linux in following Versions: 75 to 133 MHz 32 MB mem SLINK with fvwm2, netscape 4.07, SO 4.0 150 to 200 MHz 64 MB mem POTATO with fvwm2, netscape 4.72, SO 5.2 233 to ... MHz 96 MB mem WOODY with fvwm2, mozilla 1.6, OO.o 1.02
The option of remote-desktop using small (thin) clients with nothing more that a network interface, graphic controller and keyboard/mouse and running these of a central server - this would cut maintenance time and cost to a minimum while getting machines that runs smooth.
But if the Sever fails, than nothing will work...
Yes - but one server is a lot easyer to keep alive that 100 computers...
