This is a very GOOD approach, and I sincerely wish more companies
would read data via views and write it via stored procedures. It
makes things SOOOOOOO much easier on the DBA who doesn't have to
chase down 15 application developers when he wants to change a
table and have everybody update at once.
I invite you to explore PostgreSQL (http://www.postgresql.org). It
features all of the advanced stuff that you might expect that
imitation databases like MySQL don't, such as views and stored
procedures, it's own procedural language based on Oracle's PL/SQL
and a wide variety of others, actually has data integrity and
reliability, and in many cases is faster than MySQL (excepting if
your tables are very basic, you don't join much, and care less
about the data being 100% accurate).
IMNSHO, MySQL gives a bad name to the open source community simply
because of it's popularity. It is certainly nowhere near the level
of Microsoft SQL or PostgreSQL.
For the record, you can run PHP on a linux/unix host just fine,
using the freetds library (and optionally unixodbc) to communicate
with your Microsoft SQL servers. ODBC makes for more
simplified/controlled connection management, whereas direct linking
against the client libraries is higher performance.
Cheers,
