Good catch, I am also impressed by this bug's longevity :) Anyway, there seems another misunderstanding at using variable 'Resolution'; by the term "color resolution" in the GIF specification (http://www.w3.org/Graphics/GIF/spec-gif89a.txt), it declares the 'number of bits per primary color', which is the fixed value '8' in libgd, then the "color resolution" field should be constant '7'(111 in bits).
