I jsut looked in configure.ac, and I think this is where to begin:
if test -e "$LIBPNG_CONFIG"; then
LIBPNG_CFLAGS=
$LIBPNG_CONFIG --cflags
LIBPNG_LIBS=$LIBPNG_CONFIG --libs
with_png=yes
I suspect we need to set another couple values there, but no idea what.
