It's valid. I bet if you turned on the full error reporting you'd see a
warning about that index not existing.
Just at a guess, did you really mean $team[$team_id[$j]]? From what you have
above, I think you might want something like
$team[$row_in_results_we_care_about]['ColumnName'] for use with an array
generated by $teamp[] = mysql_fetch_array($result);
