I have read warnings that this (imagecreatefromstring.php) is killer SLOW simply because it is
server side. Have you found this to be true?
Would you suggest just making the thumbnail when the file is uploaded, or do you think it is wiser
just to make a thumbnail when the user requests it, and just make them wait for the server side
code to crunch?
