As someone who's also used PHP for quite a long time, I generally consider
it a good practice to read the release announcements for the last couple of
versions of PHP whenever I'm upgrading (or even considering upgrading) to
the latest version.
It's a practice that helps to eliminate this sort of surprise. I heartily
recommend it.
