HELP, mssql_connect($hostname,$username,$password) ?

hi!
I have this string in my .php-file, but it never finish succesfully :
mssql_connect($hostname,$username,$password) or die("DATABASE FAILED TO
RESPOND.");
please help me, Sybase support OK. But no one packets flow to $hostname
(i'd see it via tcpdump)
What does it mean:
"mssql_connect() establishes a connection to a MS SQL server. The
servername argument has to be a valid servername that is
defined in the 'interfaces' file." ???
this is from: php-manual/function.mssql-connect.html
what is interface file??
