I know tis a pain in the butt to do .. but wouldn't it be easier if you wanted to force a down
load to zip the file(s) first? that way making them down load the gipped file?

Yes, but does not work with 100% of browsers. At least some versions of IE
won't play ball and try to display your file regardless of what you tell it
to do.
