Actually, SQL server is the least-broken MS product, so maybe I should
re-think that...
Okay, for *ASP*, you need a mil. Half-mil for PHP + SQL Server. :-)

Wild Guesses:
Apache user does not have permission to connect to SQL Server.
You haven't applied the latest MS Server Pack to the SQL Server box.
The computer with PHP on it is "blocked" from SQL Server.
The way you are connecting with 'root' uses sockets, but with Apache it's
TCP/IP, and that's blocked.
There are like a zillion more guesses I could make, but these are the most
common...
Give us some data -- Don't make us guess.
