PHP 4.2.2 and Apache LoadModule issue

Hi All.
I am having a weird problem... my PHP is outputting a "libphp4.a" and
"libphp4.la" modules and I can't get Apache to recognize this type of
file. Is there a way to tell PHP to generate a ".so" module? Or how can
I get Apache to use the .a and .la modules?
