exception handling, global debug string

Hi,
I don't need full blown exception handling, but I would like to
print my global debug string if my program crashes. Is there any
way I can do this?
E.g.
<program crashes>
print $global_debug_string;
In perl I can do this, which is great:
$return = eval ( whole_program() );
if ($return != $ok ) debug_function();
