After you call session_destroy() session_id() will return nothing.
so you could do this:
// example only
session_start();
print "<br>" . session_id(); // now you see it....
$_SESSION = array();
session_destroy();
print "<br>" . session_id(); // ...now you don't!
if (! session_id() ) // test it.... now you can be sure.
die("no session");
