drawing with alpha in GD 2.0.1

I have 2 images (image1 = photo, image2 = colored shapes).
None of which have an alpha channel and I wish to place image2 over image1
with an opacity of 50%.
Is this possible with GD 2.0.1 or should I try something like ImageMagick?
If this can't be done I might considder dynamicaly constructing the colored
shapes all over.
I then need to allocate colors with an 50% opacity and draw the shapes over
image1.
Can this be done with GD?
