Is that page actually parsing anything? Do a view source and see if the php
code is showing up in the browser. Try this instead
<?php echo 'Expand is: ' . $expand; ?>
If PHP is just not passing the variable value you should get
Expand is:
If you still get nothing...there's something else at work
