writing html in php.............. newbie question

Hi all: I am just trying to display an applet using php.... but for some reason it doesn't load (applet loads, but keeps saying nullpointer in the java console....) i know the code works as I have tried using cgi to return it as a html page, and it displays the information.... here is the code. function drawplot() { print "<HTML><HEAD><TITLE>DrawPlot Printing Results</TITLE></HEAD>\n"; print "<BODY>\n"; print "<APPLET CODE=\"Drawplot.class\" CODEBASE=\"http://$codebase/Volcano/wui/plotter/drawplot\"\n"; print " WIDTH=680 HEIGHT=540 >\n"; print " <PARAM NAME=\"file\" VALUE=\"many\">\n"; print " <PARAM NAME=\"filelist\" VALUE=\"isospace.txt,isoline.txt\">\n"; print " <PARAM NAME=\"session\" VALUE=\"BP1030124307\">\n"; print " </APPLET>"; print "</BODY>"; print "</HTML>"; } and i call drawplot somewhere else... can i not do this in php?? please help.
