am looking to create my own xml based scripting language for a program I am writing. I know that all of the xml parsing tools are with PHP, but I'm not exactly sure how I would implement everything? Can anyone offer any advice, or has an open source scripting language parser for php alreay been written?? For those that want to know, the reason I'm not just using PHP, is that the product I'm creating needs to be so easy to use that no real programming experience is needed. Scripting is optional, but used when necessary to create custom actions. Take this for example: <setvar>
    <name>test</name>
    <value>Hello World!</value>
</setvar> <print>
    <var>
        <name>test</name>
    </var>
</print> <!-- Prints Hello World! --> or <setvar name="test" value="Hello World!"/> <print>
    <var name="test"/>
</print> <!-- Prints Hello World! --> Both scripts would do the same thing - and it's pretty human-friendly scripting. Can anyone offer advice how to make this work??
I am probably going to regret because I do not have time now to document and release this, but what you are looking for is more or less implemented by a meta-programming compiler tool named MetaL that I started developing 3 years ago. It is not a scripting language engine. It is a compiler engine that processes source code defined in XML tags like you defined and generates the same program in one or more languages. Currently it generates PHP and Java. I was working on Perl bindings but I do not have enough time for now to do it. Many of some ready to use components that I developed and made available in the PHP Classes site were developed in with MetaL but nobody could tell looking at them. I do not have time to prepare to release it right now, but I plan to release it as an Open Source project, maybe next year. Anyway, I already gave to two talks on Open Source conferences about it and the slides are available here: http://www.meta-language.net/metal/toc.html The system will be released in -- Regards, Manuel Lemos
