I assume the problem is that the MS Word pasted content is not ASCII.    I need to convert this content to ASCII before we encode the MIME message.

You should not be using base64 but rather quoted-printable with the right character encoding headers. If you do not know how to do it, take a look at this class and examples to see how to specify the encoding: http://www.phpclasses.org/mimemessage -- Regards, Manuel Lemos
