getimagesize with image in database

Hi, I'm trying to get an image size from an image in a database.
here's my code
$imagesize = getimagesize(http://domain/image.jpg);
echo $imagesize[3];
but it returns nothing. If I use a local file, without http it works.
I have php 4.0.6
any suggestions.
