Imagemangick, can I install on a virtual host?

I'd like to use some of the Imagemagick functions; but my virtual host doesn't include it and won't bother to install it.
Is it practical to install Imagemagick php on a virtual host?
Has php. It's not a shell account. FTP is the only basic access.
