Bugs when PHP handles large numbers ?

I seem to have come across bugs when I use large numbers with
PHP(4.0.1pl2-Win32), most mathematical operations such as ,&, ^, tend to
return incorrect values. Has anyone faced this problem too, or has a
workaround for this ?
Would really appreciate input on this.
