When I've done this, I put the ttfs in /usr/local/fonts/ttf
Then I defined a const for the dir,
define('FONTDIR','/usr/local/font/ttf/')
And used concat to build the absolute path:
$font = FONTDIR . 'arial.ttf';
You can uses file_exists() to make sure it's not a permissions problem
