creating libphp4.so on AIX 4.3 with Apache 1.3.x

I've got apache 1.3.12 running on aix 4.3.3 and successfully hooked in php4
with a borrowed copy of libphp4.so. Now I need to include Oracle 8.1.7 calls
so I'm trying to build php4 with oracle support but I don't get a .so file
in any of my efforts. So far I've used
cd php-4.2.2
./configure --with-oracle --with-apxs=/usr/HTTPServer/bin/apxs --with-apache
=/usr/HTTPServer
make
make install
I've tried it without the --with-apache= as well as just --with-apxs (no
path). According to all the docs the .so is just supposed to be magically
created, but if so I can't tell where. The make scripts are running through
cleanly.
Can anybody see what I'm missing ?
