How about this:
function getgreetingtime() {
$hour = date("G");
switch(true) {
case($hour < 12):
$time = "morning";
break;
case($hour >= 12 && $hour < 18):
$time = "afternoon";
break;
case($hour >= 18):
$time = "evening";
break;
}
return $time;
}
