I don't know of any good independent direct comparisons, but having worked
with both I have some thoughts.
> 1. Speed
Both are fairly fast. IMHO, unless there are significant differences, speed
is the last thing to compare. If there's a speed issue, usually it's with
the user's connection to the Internet.
> 2. Scalarbility
Java takes this one. While a great tool for what it's designed for, PHP is
somewhat limited to Web programming. Java can be used for everything from
simple contact forms to full-fledged, non-Web systems.
> 3. Function ( Api available )
Again, I think Java wins this one. With JDBC it has abstract database
connection, plus a really diverse collection of Class libraries.
That being said, JSP is also a memory hog, and Tomcat is still in its early
stages.
