GD, ImageCreate(), ImageCreateFromJPEG()

I'm new to all of the GD stuff and am unable to get
ImageCreateFromJPEG() to work. if I do a phpinfo() it says gd: Version
1.6 or later, FreeType Support. Here's a snippet of my code:
$image_name = "pics/database/articles/1.jpg";
$src = ImageCreateFromJpeg($image_name);
If I call it like this, I get a "Call to unsupported function..." error
- if I do it with the pathname in my function call I get a parse error.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,
