ummm...that'll match the "hi:you!" string.
$text = ":a I met:b a :c traveller :dfrom an antique land :e";
preg_match_all('/(?:^|\s):([a-z])\b/', $text, $matches);
matches[1] would then contain array( 'a', 'c', 'e' )
