Do you have to tell them they've won instantly? If you do, then you can't really be playing fair, because if the odds are 1 in 24, then you'll have 3 winners out of the first 3*24=72 contestants. Why not do the sweepstakes thing, where the first person to get the entry in wins, and do that every 8 hours. So you might have a winner in 10 minutes, but you wouldn't tell them they won for another 7 hours and 50 minutes. The rest of the contestants will never know (and would really be trying fruitlessly - but that's how sweepstakes are, the winning number is picked at the start and is known by the judges), and neither would you if you only checked the winner's list with a periodic cron job that chooses the first winner. > -----Original Message----- > From: Tim Haynes [mailto:thaynes@shropshirestar.co.uk] > Sent: Wednesday, October 23, 2002 12:21 PM > To: php-general@lists.php.net > Subject: [PHP] An interesting one!!! > > > Here is a puzzle, infact it is a game that I need to do in > PHP, here is the > spec > > 3 prizes to be won every day over a month by clicking on 24 seperate > windows....and thats it > > How could I go about deciding whether a user that clicked on > one of the > windows is a winner or not, obviously I wouln't want the > prizes to go in the > first hour of the day, so would need to spread it out abit. > > Any ideas would be greatly appreciated????? > > Cheers, > > Tim. > > > > > -- > PHP General Mailing List (http://www.php.net/) > To unsubscribe, visit: http://www.php.net/unsub.php > >
