Upload Problems with large files

Heres the problem I'm having. If someone tries to upload a file thats larger than the memory_limit (16M) then they get a message from the browser saying that the page contains no data. That apache process is then shot and can no longer run any scripts, it returns the same error message to every user that then hits that process. ANyone have any ideas?
PHP Version: 4.1.2
Apache: 1.3.22
