There are 'valid email' snippets on a few sites (manuel's comes
to mind but I don't remember the address - phpclasses.upperdesign.com?)
These snippets will attempt to deliver the mail by directly
connecting to the destination mail server. If there's a problem, the
function will report some type of code back to you. Bear
in mind that if you've got a lot of mails going out this way, it'll be
slower than passing stuff to a sendmail queue for later processing.
Also, some hosts will accept the mail anyway (if the 'address' is
a 'catchall', for example), and may still later send a reply that the
it can't deliver the mail.
In short, you can't 100% reliably determine programmatically if the
email account 'exists' as a functioning, usable email address.
