Problems getting php4 up and running with apache 1.3.12

I (successfully) installed apache 1.3.12 and the php4 latest src package. when I try to execute the test script platinum:/usr/local/apache/cgi-bin # cat test.php3 <? phpinfo(); ?> I get the following error message.
