abort abnormally

I am designing a bbs. A major problem facing me is how can i deal with the
situation if a user abort abnormally. I want to reload the nums of online
user every 20 seconds. Obviously, i can't del this user's data from database
upon other user's request because it is so inefficient.
Any better solutions are approciated.
